  • A Look Into Lighting

    April 14, 2017

When it comes to discussing lighting (FUN!), we are used to hearing the term “wattage” as a means of describing light bulbs and the strength of the fixture. However, with the increase of LED fixtures as mainstream, this has brought a whole new ‘light’ to the terminology – see what I did there?  There is a new way to gauge electrical output: Lumens.  Lumens measure brightness, whereas wattage is actually the amount of electricity used by the lightbulb or fixture.  In the past, we would recommend 120 watts as an efficient amount of lighting for an average bedroom, whi

  • Making the Team Better

    March 10, 2017

At Hawthorn one of our core values is to make the team better. This ideal can be interpreted in many ways, but for us, the team isn’t just the Hawthorn staff. We think our clients and our vendors are part of the team too. Why is that so important? When building a home, there are a lot of moving parts, decisions, and coordination that go into the process. Just like an engine, if one of the parts is not functioning properly, the whole process breaks down. That is why is so important to have the builder, client, subcontractors and vendors all working together. If one of those team member

  • Sailing Away with Shiplap

    August 26, 2016

For those who are familiar with HGTV’s series, Fixer Upper, you are well aware of the undying love Joanna Gaines has for shiplap.  For many of you though, this might be a term you have never heard before; perhaps it applies to some nautical reference? Perhaps the number of times a boat crosses the ocean?  Shiplap is actually a milled lumber consisting of simple interlocking pieces, where the top and bottom of each board is milled with a rabbet joint to form an attractive wood siding.  In the past, shiplap was commonly applied as a form of exterior siding, however the trend has taken itsel

  • The Hub of the Home

    June 29, 2016

As promised, I wanted to continue to share some of the highlights from the design presentation I attended at Clarke last month. Step 2 – Lifestyle Value: our clients are more willing to invest in their lifestyle than ever before.  People are more aware of brands and trends and what they want showcased in their home.  Because of this, we as designers need to address each client’s space and lifestyle accordingly.  The layout of a family gathering around the kitchen table while a mom prepares a five course dinner to be served at 5:00, is not necessarily the norm anymore.  Today the kitch
